Out & About

It is said that when Mary Queen of Scots came to our village she exclaimed, 'Oui. C'est un beau lieu.' Hence the name Beauly – (Beautiful place).

Well 400 years later the eponymous description still fits. In fact, Beauly recently won the title 'Best Large Village' in the Britain in Bloom competition. Beyond the cornucopia of flowers bedecking the market square and buildings, Beauly is in the midst of some of Scotland's finest mountains and glens. Glen Affric, Glen Cannich and Strathfarrar are on Beauly's doorstep. They are reckoned to be three of Scotland's finest glens. They are adorned with grand old Scots Pines, Wild Orchids and Primroses; they are inhabited by the Red Squirrel, Pine Martin, Deer, Wildcat and Black Grouse. High above these rich natural environments soar awe-inspiring snow clad Munros circled by Golden Eagles.

The village boasts an array of shops from specialist outfitters, coffee shops and a delicatessen to the more traditional facilities of banks, post office, butcher and baker.

Every Thursday night (June – Sept) we have entertainment in the square in the front of the hotel with highland dancing and a full pipe band.

This is undoubtedly a heavenly place to roam, to cycle, to pony-trek, to canoe, to fish or shoot, to play golf, or just sit in the sun by a still loch and meditate.

Tours – By prior arrangement we can assist in organising a guided tour with an independent operator.

Fishing – Beauly is situated along side one of Scotland’s most renowned Salmon fishing rivers – The River Beauly – Morisons ironmongers in the village will help with info and tickets.

Distilleries - The Highlands of Scotland is famous for whisky distilling and most now have their own visitor centres. Here is a small list and an idea of proximity to the Hotel.

Muir of Ord – 3 miles, Dalmore - 20 miles, Tomatin - 27 miles, Glenmorangie - 35 miles, Old Pulteney 102 miles.

Golf – A thriving pastime in The Highlands; particularly in the wake of hosting the Scottish Open on our doorstep. As a visitor to Beauly you will be spoiled for choice when looking for a golf course.

Our nearest course is the short but very tricky Muir of Ord under 3 miles away, but we would be happy to arrange tee times at any of the great courses in the area. There is also a 9 hole course at Aigas about 5 miles away ideal for a quick game.

Walking – A large number of guests use The Priory as a base for walking holidays – Within a short distance are some of the most stunning glens including Glen Affric, Glen Cannich and Glen Strathfarrar.

There are suitable routes for all abilities.
